My oldest son is your typical 13 year old boy in a lot of ways. He likes spending time on the computer, anything electronic really, and would live on video games if I let him. But I can still get him to put down the video game controller long enough to watch a movie with me, as long as there’s a film that sparks his interest and a tasty bowl of popcorn.
A movie that I know he’s anxious to see is Assassin’s Creed, which arrives in theaters on December 21st! Based off the classic video game series, it’s sure to be a hit and definitely something we can have fun going to together. Until then, though, we grabbed a box of the Pop Secret Homestyle 10+2 ct bonus packs at Walmart for our at-home movie night. It really goes without saying that any great movie night needs a great bowl of popcorn. And, in honor of Assassin’s Creed, we made Death By Chocolate Popcorn.
With a name like Death By Chocolate Popcorn, you know it has to be good with lots of chocolate. It’s not just any chocolate popcorn, however. It’s chocolate cake batter popcorn. With chocolate sprinkles. Plus, we also added in some red and green sprinkles, both because the red went with the theme of Death By Chocolate Popcorn, and because it’s festive.
I think it’s safe to say my son is happy to watch a movie with me now. Even if it’s in the teen handbook that he’s not allowed to show it.
For our Death By Chocolate Popcorn, I used one of my favorite kitchen staples, almond bark. It’s so much easier than dealing with regular chocolate and I prefer the taste. Melt 8oz in the microwave, then add ⅓ of a cup of a chocolate fudge cake mix. Because the more chocolate the better.
Spread a full bag of popped Pop Secret Homestyle Popcorn across a large sheet of wax paper. Then, use a spoon to drizzle the chocolate mixture. At this point, use your hands to toss the popcorn in the chocolate and get every kernel coated. Finish it off with some sprinkles before the chocolate sets.
He may be getting older, but my son and I still have so much fun together. I’m just glad that he’ll still set down his gadgets to spend time with me, because there’s nothing in the world that can beat popcorn and a movie with this guy.
- 1 bag Pop Secret Homestyle Popcorn, popped
- 8 oz almond bark
- ⅓ cup chocolate fudge cake mix
- sprinkles
- First, pop the popcorn according to package directions. Prepare a large sheet of wax paper on a table.
- Melt 8 oz of almond bark in a microwave in 20 second increments, stirring each time, until smooth. Add chocolate cake mix and stir until well combined.
- Set out popcorn on wax paper in a single layer. Drizzle with chocolate mixture. Use your hands to coat popcorn with chocolate as evenly as possible.
- Top with sprinkles.
- Let popcorn set until chocolate hardens.
- Best eaten fresh, but can be kept in an airtight container.
